On 7 December, the European Commission presented its Communication on a new Aviation Strategy for Europe designed to promote a competitive EU aviation sector. This non-legislative document highlights that integration of new business models and emerging technologies is crucial for the future development of the sector. In the Communication, the Commission pledged to take the necessary steps to unleash the full potential of unmanned aircraft, commonly referred to as drones. Alongside the Strategy, the Commission presented its proposal to update the common rules in the field of civil aviation comprised in the Regulation 216/2008. The proposed reform seeks to adapt the current aviation rules to drones.In this snapshot we provide an overview of the new rules and look what the next steps are going to be.
